Mentioning Andy

How to get Andy's attention in Google Chat.

Andy listens for @MeetAndy mentions in any Google Chat space it has been added to. Once mentioned, it acknowledges immediately with an "On it…" message, then replies in a thread under your message.

Where you can mention Andy

You can mention Andy in:

  • Google Chat spaces where Andy has been added as a member
  • Threads inside any of the above. Replying with @MeetAndy in a thread keeps the conversation contained

You can't message Andy:

  • In direct messages (DMs). Andy doesn't respond to DMs with task work. If you message Andy in a DM, it replies with instructions to use a space instead
  • In spaces Andy hasn't been added to

Not sure if Andy is in a space, or need to see your setup state? Type @MeetAndy help or use the /help slash command. Andy replies with contextual guidance based on whether your Workspace is connected and whether the current space is linked to a MeetAndy Space.

Adding Andy to a new space

Find Andy in the Google Chat directory (search "MeetAndy") and add it to the space, or ask your Google Workspace admin to do so. When Andy joins, it posts a welcome message with a few example prompts.

What happens when you mention Andy

  1. Acknowledge (immediately). Andy posts an "On it…" message in a thread to confirm it received the mention. If you don't see this within a few seconds, Andy may not be in the space or your Workspace may not be connected.
  2. Think (a few seconds to a minute). Andy reads your message, the thread context, and the memory for the Space.
  3. Reply in a thread. Andy edits its acknowledgment or posts a follow-up reply with the answer. If you mentioned in an existing thread, the reply goes in that same thread.

How to phrase your mention

Just write what you want, the way you'd write to a teammate:

@MeetAndy what's the deal with the auth refresh logic in this repo?
@MeetAndy can you add a dark mode toggle to the settings page?
@MeetAndy summarize this thread
@MeetAndy remember that we're using PostgreSQL 17 in production

Andy figures out from your message whether you're asking a question, asking for a plan, asking it to remember something, or asking it to make a code change. See Conversation flow for what happens next in each case.

The /help command

Type /help in any space where Andy is a member to see usage guidance. Andy replies with context-sensitive help:

  • If your Google Workspace isn't connected yet: connect instructions with a code
  • If connected but this space isn't linked to a MeetAndy Space: instructions to link it in Space settings
  • If everything is set up: example prompts and what Andy can do

@MeetAndy help works the same way.

Continuing a conversation

Once Andy has replied in a thread, you can keep mentioning Andy in that thread to continue the conversation. Andy keeps the thread context, so you don't need to repeat what you said earlier.

If you start a fresh top-level mention in the space (not a reply in the thread), that starts a new conversation. Andy won't carry over context from the earlier thread automatically.

What if Andy doesn't respond?

If you mention Andy and don't see the "On it…" acknowledgment within a few seconds, one of these is usually the cause:

  • Andy isn't in the space. Add Andy from the Google Chat directory.
  • The Google Chat integration is disconnected. A company admin can check Company settings → Integrations → Google Chat and reconnect.
  • This space isn't linked to a MeetAndy Space. Andy can still respond to @MeetAndy help, but won't run tasks. Link the space in Space settings → Google Chat.

If Andy acknowledged with "On it…" but never posted a reply, that usually means Andy hit an internal error. Try mentioning again, or contact support.
